Midterm Paper Source

For my midterm paper, I am using an article that appeared in the New York Times in 1855 titled “Fiendish Murder near Falton, MO.” This article, written by a white journalist, briefly covers the murder of Robert Newsom by his slave, Celia. Celia had endured repeated sexual abuse and had warned Newsom to stay away from her cabin or she would hurt him. When he came to her cabin one night, she sought to protect herself by hitting him, but she wound up killing him.  Although Celia had clear reasons for unintentionally killing Newsom, this article completely ignores Celia’s perspective and claims that the murder “was committed without any sufficient cause.”
