I am interested in studying the role of religion in slavery for my midterm paper. The Bible was often used to justify slavery, but at the same time, many enslaved people used Christianity as a means to push through hardship, and trust that justice would be served to the evil people who enslaved them. I have found two options of African-American women whose lives were influenced heavily on religion, one of whom I would like to study:
1. Amanda Smith
2. Henriette DeLille
A possible primary source for Amanda Smith would be the journal of Amanda Smith, and a possible source for Henriette DeLille would be Propelled by Faith: Henriette DeLille and the Literacy Practices of Black Women Religious in Antebellum New Orleans.
