response to Vanessa

Vanessa,

I found your poem extremely moving because of the very specific images that you wrote about. Firstly, the bruised knuckles of the organizers was an image that I never would have thought about. The day to day repetition and physical toll that real grassroots organizing took, especially in the non-urban south, must have been extremely hard work. The other image that was extremely powerful to me was the freedom dripping from their lips. Despite blood, sweat, tears, and violence, the freedom did not leave their bodies. The resistance stayed strong despite trials and immense obstacles. Thank you for this poem full of very specific and creative imagery.
