The subject of my midterm essay
is Ann Plato, the first African American to publish a book of essays. Of her
many pieces, I’ve chosen to analyze Plato’s Education
essay. Throughout Education, Plato
reiterates education as a critical role in the success of people, even going as
far as to say “life is but one big school”. The combination of education and a
religious context, according to Plato, illuminates a society and entitles it members
to becoming civilized. Yet, Education
also briefly discusses the issues about access to quality education and methods
of learning present in children’s schools in the mid 1800s.
